a tag, a tag, my kingdom for a tag
I have so far resisted doing some kind of weird THIS IS MY TAGGING SYSTEM DON'T MESS IT UP JUST SMILE AND NOD AND FOLLOW IT CORRECTLY post, for three reasons:
1. too lazy,
2. every time I would start I would just get distracted and start adding even more new tags to the list, and
3. I didn't want you guys to know just how much I love tagging things. I love it a lot. Like, a lot?

But then I realised only me and Ren were posting things which meant MAYBE YOU ALL WERE INTIMIDATED or something, and maybe I need to explain how to tag posts so that you don't end up confused and alone.

So here's a (tentative!!!!) guide to the tagging system in this comm.

THE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO TAGGING WITHOUT GETTING GRASPIE ALL UP IN YO SHIT
aka wow, i'm a loser, please don't hold it against me.
OR: POSSIBLY THE MOST EMBARRASSINGLY THOROUGH THING I WILL EVER POST IN THIS COMM

GEOGRAPHY
First, we have the geographic tags. Where does your post talk about? What place on the planet are the people or legislation or politicians from/affecting? This is where these tags come in:

continent: africa
continent: asia
continent: australasia
continent: europe
continent: north america
continent: south america
continent: world-wide

Please choose the correct tag so that people, in future, can use the tags as an archive of the continent's news, ty <3

If the post is a just a general post, or one that affects everywhere, then please use the continent: world-wide tag instead of tagging the post with ALL the tags.

ALSO: PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE SPACE BETWEEN THE WORD "CONTINENT:" AND THE WORD "EUROPE", ETC. THERE IS A SPACE, PLEASE DO NOT FORGET IT. I WILL CRY IF U DO. THANKYOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING <3333

Also, do any members come from / live in the Middle East? I know technically speaking it's part of Asia, but the issues are very different there compared with the rest of Asia, so do you think you ought to have your own tag? And if so, what should it be called bc I know some people don't like "Middle East". ???????????

Please let me know, I would love to add a new tag for you. (No, really, I would love it).

IGNORE THAT, SEE BELOW vvvvvv TY

REGIONS

Now, as well as continent tags we also have region tags. These tags should be used when you are talking about that specific area, as we know issues and tensions can vary a lot within a continent. At the moment the region tags we have are:

region: central america
region: arab league
region: caribbean
region: central america
region: commonwealth
region: eastern asia
region: eastern europe
region: gaza strip
region: north africa
region: scandinavia
region: schengen zone
region: south asia
region: sub-saharan africa
region: western asia
region: western europe

But don't worry if you don't see one you'd like for your area. As we only just started making these region tags, more are coming soon. We are always open for new suggestions though, so please feel more than free to just comment here with a list :3

IMMIGRATION
Next we have the common immigration-related issues. Please choose the ones that best fit your post (if any of them do, which I suspect at least one will, but hey, you never know). So far we have:

border crossing
citizenship
colonialism
deportation
emigration
ethnicity
globalisation
hate crimes
immigration
nationality
passports & paperwork
patriotism
race
refuge and refugees
warzones

Any more suggestions will be gratefully accepted <3

Feel free to add as many of them as you feel are necessary for your post. If you aren't sure what a tag means then please check wikipedia. Or just have a guess. I'm cool with that.

CULTURE
Next, we have tags to deal with certain specific cultural issues that usually arise with immigration or from being a (racial/ethnic) minority in a country or community. These tags include:

appropriation
births
but where is the vegemite?

(This tag is the thing to use when posting about how difficult it is to find food you are accustomed to when you emigrate, for instance. Obviously few of us actually care about vegemite (mainly because it's disgusting) but hey, you get the point.)
celebrations
culture
death & funerals
family
food & cooking
mixed race
names & naming ceremonies
relationships
special days
weddings

OPPRESSIONS
Then we have tags that you can add if your post deals with other issues, especially -isms such as sexism or ableism, etc. Obviously these will not always be necessary depending on what your post is about.

ableism
anglocentrism
classism
homophobia
racism
sexism
transphobia
xenophobia

Just a quick reminder: in this comm we use the power + prejudice definition of oppression. In other words, white people cannot be racially oppressed by people of colour, straight people cannot experience homophobia even if someone calls them a homophobic slur or if they're ~kinky~, women cannot be sexist against men, etc etc.

If you belong to a privileged group (ie, white or straight or cis, etc) then please don't be a dick if someone calls you out for privileged behaviour, even if they don't do it particularly ~nicely. (This is the only exception to the "no name-calling" rule, btw, so don't come crying to me or Ren if you're being a privileged dickscab and someone calls you a poopoo head. We won't ban them, we'll join in.)

POLITICS
Politicians like to make our lives hell. They promise us shit then fail to come through. They make us vote for them by being slightly less dickish than their rivals and then decide to cut funding for everything we care about. Occasionally they'll pass a law that makes us happy, but most of the time they're writing legislation to make our lives even harder than they already are.

I know you're going to end up ranting here about politics a lot, so here are the tags you'll need:

adoption/international adoption
budget cuts
census
communism
democracy
dictatorships
elections
european union
fuck the police
imports & exports
laws and legality
legislation
neo-nazism
politicians are all middle-class
politicians are all white
politicians are all men
politicians are awesome
politicians are dickscabs
politicians never learn
politics
revolution
sarkozy est un grand dickscab
statistics
the far left
the far right
trade
united nations

Any requests then just tell me. I won't do individual politicians tho, unless they are repeatedly dickish. (I just don't wanna end up with 47654385643793 politician tags that are used once and forgotten about, that's all).

EDUCATION AND MONEY
Jobs are important. They give you something to do all day instead of watching terrible daytime telly, and you get money for going. Getting a job as an immigrant or as a poc can be difficult, especially if your education has been affected by racist or xenophobic teachers and schools. If you are unable to work, or unable to find work, it can be hard to access the benefits you are owed by the government, or the money you would be allowed if you were native-born or white.

When posting about money, jobs, or education, please use these tags:

benefits
education
income
jobs and work
literacy
money and wealth
schooling and learning
taxes
university and college

RELIGION
Religion can be a touchy issue anywhere, but if you have migrated to a place where your religion is a minority then things can be doubly hard. Add to that the assumption (in the western world, at least) that anything other than Christian = wrong, and the attempts by missionaries to convert ~scary brown heathens~ to Christianity, and religion can be a big messy deal.

These are the religion tags we have at the moment:

anti-semitism
atheism
buddhism
christianity
conversion
hijab / burqa / niqab issues
hinduism
islam
islamophobia
judaism
religion
Sikhism

I've only included a few religions because I wasn't sure what we needed???? Lol, idk. If you have any suggestions or you want another religion to have a tag then ask and I will pander to your every whim and desire.

LANGUAGE
A lot of us don't speak English as our first language.
Some of us speak it as our second, some as our fifteenth.
We all face the same issues though, even those of us who were taught English by our parents instead of their mother-tongue because they were hoping we would assimilate better. And that's where language tags come in.

assimilation
bilingualism
code-switching
english is gross
language issues
monolingualism
multilingualism
parlez-vous anglais
(you know, that thing where English-speakers expect us to be 100% fluent without an accent before they'll accept us, whereas they literally only learn enough of a language to be able to say "do you speak English?" and that's ok because they're English speakers and they can DO NO WRONG~)

On a similar note, please feel free to post in a language that isn't English, especially if you are uncomfortable speaking English. <3

MEDIA
A big part of settling in a new country, or being a minority is getting used to a lack of accurate representation in the media, so I figure at some point people are going to post about that. Please use the following tags when talking about these subjects:

bollywood
celebrities
cinema
hollywood
literature
media representation
music
musicians
pop culture
sports
television

If you need any other tags then don't hesitate to ask. I mean, I can't think of any off the top of my head but lol I'm kinda thick so that doesn't mean much.

MOD TAGS
These tags are for the mods to use only. If one gets added to your post then whoops for you.

!mod tag
(Any important info about the comm will be posted using this tag to make it easy to find.)
took a wrong turn onto whiteprivilege st
wow my mods are so cool

GENERAL
And finally, the other, general tags for your pleasure (and displeasure):

and everything went better than expected
fffffffffffffffffu
general awesomeness
general dickscabbery
no u
original content
questions/advice
wahooooo
what is this

Use whenever necessary.
And if you need a new tag to correctly express your feelings, then just hit me up and I'll add it. <3

So... I think that's it? I THINK. IDK.
If in doubt, use all the tags. ALL THE TAGS. That way you can't go wrong !!!!
...or you could just ask but w/e, where's the fun in that.

This looks awesome <3 thanks!
one question, should Central America be tagged together with North or South? I've run into several different systems for categorising America(s) - i'm accustomed to calling it all America but i've noticed that doesn't always go over well outside Latin America, plus I see why it's useful in this comm to make the tags more specific than that - so just wondering how Central America is handled here
dirty gyppo: allie ; smilegraspthethorn on April 19th, 2011 09:24 pm (UTC)
we've got a region: central america tag now :3. thanks for reminding us, haha.
and we've added a region: caribbean tag too, in case that's needed.

hope that helps <3

I like this tagging system. Makes it easier to read and learn things I need to know before asking potentially stupid/offensive questions.}:P
